Oral Reading Contest at Blue
Ridge Elementary
The tradition of students in grades one through five reading
on stage and being judged on their fluency, expression, articulation, and
overall impression continues at Blue Ridge Elementary. The annual Oral Reading
Contest took place, Friday, May 23rd. Eight to ten students from each grade
level presented themselves onstage and read from a selection they had practiced
and then were given a cold read, something they read for the first time. The
Oral Reading Contest provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their
oral reading ability along with stage presence, projection, and animation of
word delivery. What a great experience and opportunity for all the readers!
Blue Ridge Elementary is very proud of each participant for it is quite an honor
to be selected as a reader! First, second, and third places were awarded at
each grade level. Congratulations to all the participants and winners listed

Sea Turtle Unit
Blue Ridge Fourth Grade students recently completed their annual Sea Turtle Unit
in Sarrah Dibble-Camburn's art class. Students watched the Seaworld movie
Turtle: The Incredible Journey, created a Sea Turtle Awareness Poster,
and a Clay Sea Turtle. Fourth Graders took an optional collection among their
fourth grade class, donated it to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, and adopted a Sea
Turtle named Banjo. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle can be tracked via a
satellite telemetry on www.conserveturtles.org

May is Get Caught Reading Month!
Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to remind
people of all ages how much fun it is to read. May is Get Caught Reading month,
but the campaign is promoted throughout the year. Check out this link to find
out more information and to read the fact sheet of Literacy Facts, http://www.getcaughtreading.org/literacy-facts.php
Here a few students, teachers and para-educators who where caught reading
today! Check back to see more pictures throughout the month. Also, if you catch
your child reading at home or in an interesting place snap a picture and send it
to me at tenchj@brsd.org, pictures might be used on the blog or hung up in the
hallway outside of the library!
Let's see how many kids we can catch reading this month!
