5th Grade Chorus Performing the "Nutcracker"

On December 2, 2010, stage of the Blue Ridge High School Theater was transformed into the Kingdom of Sweets as fifth grade chorus members performed a musical version of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.” The musical follows a young girl named Marie whose nutcracker doll magically comes to life and guides her on a tour of the Kingdom of Sweets, where they are entertained by Sugar Plum Fairies, Russian Bakers, Arabian Dancers, Flowers, and many others.

Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast Met a Multiple of State Standards!

On Friday, November 19th, the kindergarten classes sang and danced to Thanksgiving songs. Several parents from each classroom volunteered to assist in food preparation. The children also prepared tablecloths and placemats for this event. This performance met the music and movement/gross motor skills, as well as the production and performance state standards. The cafeteria was filled with several family and community members, which met our family engagement/involvement state standard. While preparing for this performance, literacy and mathematics standards were addressed through reading recipes and measuring ingredients to make our treats. Health and safety standards were reviewed by reminding children to wash their hands before preparing and eating foods. Fine motor skills were applied through the creation of costume and decoration making for the performance. While learning about Native Americans, pattern making was reviewed by making pasta necklaces and headbands. Special thanks to Miss Dibble, Elementary Art Teacher, for preparing costumes, Mrs. Cole-Koloski, Food Service Manager, for baking our treats, and the custodial staff for their hard work in having the facility ready. Happy Thanksgiving!

Community Read Aloud

In the picture above is Mr. McTiernan, BRSD Superintendent as a guest reader during our Community Read Aloud. He is reading a book titled: "A Plump and Perky Turkey" written by Teresa Batemen and illustrated by Jeff Shelly. Mrs. Farrell's 1st grade class said "Mr. McTiernan enjoyed the story as much as they did."

Through the use of Literacy and Technology Integration, Social Studies State Standards are Being Met in Kindergarten!

Mrs. Rhone’s and Mrs. Skal’s Kindergarteners illustrated their family history by making a family tree. In preparation for this project, parents were asked to submit family pictures that could be used for their child’s family tree. After listening to the book entitled, When the Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant with the use of our classroom document camera, the kindergarteners discussed how individuals are unique and special. Through text-to-self connections, the kindergarteners compared and contrasted family customs and practices. The purpose of our lesson was for students to understand and respect diverse customs and practices in families. The kindergarteners continue to make comparisons and differences as they view their classmate’s family trees. Through the use of labels on their family pictures, kindergarteners are learning how to read and spell family titles such as: dad, mom, sister, brother, grandpa, grandma and the like.
