The Benefits of Summer Reading

  1. The easiest way to keep your brain sharp and smart!
  2. The easiest way to MAINTAIN your reading level or increase it.
  3. Top way to  become a better reader is to practice:  READ, READ, READ
  4. It prevents the Summer Slide.  This is a decrease in your reading level, skills, strategies, and comprehension.  It’s what happens when no reading is done for 3 months!
  5. It’s a lifelong skill, be strong, and start early!
  6. You learn new things.
  7. You become a better speller, reader, and writer.
  8. Reading aloud is the single best way to prepare children for learning to read and to keep them reading as they learn and grow.
  9. Reading aloud to your children improves listening comprehension and increases attention span.
  10. Reading aloud to your children helps them to develop important language skills that will help them learn to read on their own.
  11. Reading & rereading will build your fluency rate.
  12. Reading is FUN!

They supervised a group of first graders and led them on a scavenger hunt, an exploration through the nature trail, helped them "create" clouds, read weather related stories, and supervised a trail mix snack station.

2nd Grade Pen Pal Day

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, second grade students from Blue Ridge Elementary visited Susquehanna Community Elementary to meet their penpals. At the beginning of the year the students in these second grade classes are matched up with a penpal. They write back and forth with one another throughout the year and each May the students get to meet at one of the schools. This year Susquehanna was the host and students were able to tour the school, have a picnic outside, and enjoy a magic show by Jeremy the Illusionist. In its thirteenth year, this has proven to be a great way for students to work on writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.  Thank you to Susquehanna Community Elementary for allowing us to visit!

“Noah Martin from Blue Ridge Elementary and Brandon Donahue from Susquehanna Community Elementary meet for the first time during Blue Ridge and Susquehanna Penpal Day.”

Mrs. Hinkley from Susquehanna Elementary reads a story to students from Susquehanna and Blue Ridge Elementary Schools.
