In Mrs. Treible's class we have been learning about magnets. We have learned
about how magnets attract, what the poles of a magnet do, the different sizes,
shapes, and uses of magnets, and that the Earth is a big magnet. We also
created four different scenes with props that had a paperclip tapped to the
back. We used our magnets to move our props and we also made our props interact
with each other.

4th Grade Sea Turtle Project

Local Government Week
Each year Pennsylvania commemorates Local
Government Week, which focuses attention on the
need for strong, independent, and active local
governments. Pennsylvania recognizes the valuable
contributions their elected officials make in our
communities.
The New Milford Township likes to bring awareness
and celebration of community to the Blue Ridge Elementary
students through it's annual Local Government Week
contest. This year the students were challenged to
support our Service Men & Women by donating
Dept. of Defense approved goods to be shipped overseas
to those currently serving our country. Items were
collected March 18th - March 22.
The Kindergarten students collected the most
items. They were awarded for their participation with
patriotic goodies, as well as, a movie ticket to a
show of their choice at the Montrose Theater.
The theater helped co-sponsor the event by donating
a portion of the tickets.

6th Grade History Classes Celebrate Chinese New Year
The curriculum asks the students to learn the following
information: the origin of China,
all of the dynasties that existed in China’s history, the food, forms of
communication (calligraphy, puppetry, and language), life of families and
students.
A great opportunity come our way for our students to
participate in a Video Conference (VC) about China.
This VC will allow the students to be immersed in active
learning, without having to leave the school. They created a Chinese puppet
with diving deeper into China’s
life and culture. This activity allowed us to also utilize the
videoconferencing system that we received with the NEPA WAN investment last
year through the IU.

Music Opportunity!!
Each year, Singing Boys of Pennsylvania awards scholarships to promising students in grades 4-5-6, honoring the memory of Mavis Douglas, who sang at LaScala in Italy and in later years became a famous voice teacher.
The competitive scholarships are awarded to boys or girls who have an innately keen ear for music and sing with a natural vocal quality. A musical aptitude test measuring tonal memory and pitch discrimination ability will be administered Sunday, March 10, 2PM, at St. John Lutheran Church, 2745 Morgan Hill Road, Easton. The administration of the test takes 90 minutes. Students may also demonstrate their musicianship by playing a short piano piece or singing a hymn, short folk song such as Greensleeves, Shenandoah, Stephen Foster song, or America. Kids who like to sing are encouraged to apply.
Singing Boys of Pennsylvania and the Keystone Girls Choir rehearse in Easton, Wind Gap, and Hazleton. The Choir has sung more than 4000 concerts throughout the United States, parts of Canada and Mexico, England, Wales, and more than 300 concerts in Japan.
If you are interested, please have your child see Mrs. Burkhart for an application. Find out more about this very elite choir at http://www.singingboys.org/about

BR Elementary Celebrates Read Across America
Blue Ridge Elementary celebrated Read Across America on Friday, March 1st, with an afternoon assembly. This event is sponsored by the National Education Association and always takes place on or near March 2nd, which is the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This year’s book was Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s, a book about two dogs, Ichabod and Izzy, who journey through the alphabet and meet characters that begin with each letter. At the assembly, the students enjoyed the book read in a variety of ways. First for enjoyment, then acted out by some of our elementary students and teachers, and finally a Readers’ Theater activity where different grade levels read certain pages. Facts about the famous Dr.Seuss or Theodor Geisel were shared as well as a mini lesson on the figurative language device of alliteration. To highlight the importance of reading, students joined librarian, Mrs. Tench, in reciting “The Readers’ Oath”. The day was made extra special by the PTO purchasing Cat in the Hat pencils and ABC cookie treats for every student. Back in the classroom while eating their ABC cookies, Mrs. Wolfe’s 5th grade class was able to spell a total of 257 words as they compiled a list on the board. A day of fun and learning was had by all! We look forward to next year’s Read Across America which will be celebrated on Monday, March 3rd.
