They supervised a group of first graders and led them on a scavenger hunt, an exploration through the nature trail, helped them "create" clouds, read weather related stories, and supervised a trail mix snack station.

2nd Grade Pen Pal Day

On Thursday, May 16, 2013, second grade students from Blue Ridge Elementary visited Susquehanna Community Elementary to meet their penpals. At the beginning of the year the students in these second grade classes are matched up with a penpal. They write back and forth with one another throughout the year and each May the students get to meet at one of the schools. This year Susquehanna was the host and students were able to tour the school, have a picnic outside, and enjoy a magic show by Jeremy the Illusionist. In its thirteenth year, this has proven to be a great way for students to work on writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.  Thank you to Susquehanna Community Elementary for allowing us to visit!

A Trip Around the World

Mr. Woodruff’s Second Grade recently completed their A Trip Around the World project. This project is part of a social studies unit in which students learn about the many different places they live on earth; continent, country, state, county, city/town, etc. In addition to the lessons in the unit, each student chose one country in the world to research. They used text and online resources to gather information about their country. Some topics of focus were location, size, population, language, weather, sports, food, plants, animals, and trade. Authors worked to research, draft, revise, edit, and write and illustrate a final copy in a hardcover book. These books were shared at Open House on May 9th and the authors will also be taking time to share what they’ve learned with their classmates.
