Two Blue Ridge Elementary Students and Families Make Contributions to Library

The Blue Ridge Elementary library would like to recognize two students and their families for their recent contributions.

Tyler Hillard of Mr. Jones's 4th grade class brought in a donation of $100 from his grandfather, Donald Hillard. Mr. Hillard's contribution will be used to purchase resources in Tyler's name that will be available to all Blue Ridge Elementary students in the library. Tyler worked alongside Mrs. Tench, elementary librarian, to choose the books that will be added to the library's collection.

Diane McCarthy, grandmother to Blue Ridge students Jenna, Hannah and Emily McCarthy, donated a copy of her recently published book, The Year Santa Wore Green. Mrs. McCarthy said that she wrote the book years ago when the girls' father was young. Years later she revisited her draft and decided to have it published. She is now working on several other children's books.

The library is thankful to have such generous students and families.

Character and Community Service Assembly to Support the Ronald McDonald House

Today we had a Character and Community Service Assembly that focused on "Giving Back." The program was coordinated by BRES 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Treible and local McDonald's owners, Doug and Cindy Lattner.

This year AshLee Lattner and Kyle Watts from the Montrose Area SD held a tab collecting contest for their Senior Project. They were in charge of the bulletin board, collecting and weighing the tabs, and reporting back the totals.

The students at BRES collected 1,400+ pounds of tabs this year and were able to donate over $800 to the Ronald McDonald House Foundation.  Great Job to all involved!!
Courtney Randall is the 6th grade student who made bracelets and sold them at the ice cream store and today she donated $80 to the Ronald McDonald House Charity.

2012 Oral Reading Contest

The tradition of students in grades one through five reading on stage and being judged on their fluency, expression, articulation, and overall impression continues at Blue Ridge Elementary. The annual Oral Reading Contest took place on May 24th. Eight to Eleven students from each grade level presented themselves onstage and read from a selection they had practiced and then were given a cold read, something they read for the first time. What a great experience and opportunity for all the readers. They did an amazing job, and it was definitely an honor for them to be selected as a reader! First, second and third places were awarded at each grade level. Congratulations to all the participants and winners listed below. Blue Ridge Elementary is very proud of all of you!!
