Janelle Tench's library class.  Students discovered where the tribes lived, what they ate, animals they hunted, and what kind of dwelling they lived in.  Taking this information the groups made a rough draft and then got to work.  They used paint, found materials, and items they made from clay.  Students worked hard on 4 x 4 foot murals for several weeks.  Altogether, the fifth grade made twelve Native American murals to decorate the hallways near the district office.

Screen Free Week!!

The Elementary Library would like to congratulate the 35 students and their families that participated in Screen Free Week!  We hope that you found this experience to be rewarding and filled with time set aside to read.  It's our desire that families might use this experience to jump start their summer reading program.

Sea Turtle Unit

Blue Ridge Fourth Grade students recently completed their annual Sea Turtle Unit in Sarrah Dibble-Camburn's art class. Students watched the Seaworld movie Turtle: The Incredible Journey, created a Sea Turtle Awareness Poster, and a Clay Sea Turtle.  Fourth Graders took an optional collection among their fourth grade class, donated it to the Sea Turtle Conservancy, and adopted a Sea Turtle named Banjo. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle can be tracked via a satellite telemetry on www.conserveturtles.org

May is Get Caught Reading Month!

Get Caught Reading is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read.  May is Get Caught Reading month, but the campaign is promoted throughout the year.  Check out this link to find out more information and to read the fact sheet of Literacy Facts,  http://www.getcaughtreading.org/literacy-facts.php

Here a few students, teachers and para-educators who where caught reading today! Check back to see more pictures throughout the month. Also, if you catch your child reading at home or in an interesting place snap a picture and send it to me at tenchj@brsd.org, pictures might be used on the blog or hung up in the hallway outside of the library!

Let's see how many kids we can catch reading this month!
