May is "Get Caught Reading Month", which is nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read!

May is "Get Caught Reading Month", which is nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read!

All you have to do to participate is to snap a picture of your child "getting caught" reading and send them in. Be as creative as you would like with reading spots.  Some kids last year were caught reading in a tree or with a sibling.  The pictures will be shared in a slideshow during library class. Also, some of these pictures will be shared on Mr. Button’s blog and used to promote the Summer Reading Program.

Please send pictures to Mrs. Tench at tenchj@brsd.org as an attachment, with your child’s name as the picture name.

Let’s see where we can “Get Caught Reading” during the month of May!

Mrs. Wolfe’s 5th grade students come up with new and creative ways to share the books they have read with the class.  Each month, students read a chapter book of choice.  While reading, they record predictions, characters, setting, and a summary of the book.  At the end of the month, they each present their book to the class in any way they want.  For example, a book letter, a power point, a paper Mache model, a play, a commercial, a triorama, etc. This month, Tori Auckland had the idea to recreate a scene from Double Fudge where one of the characters paints her feet and her father has her walk on a canvas.   Each student had one foot painted by another student and then stepped on a rolled out paper.  The class did not leave out their teacher, Mrs. Wolfe or Mr. Button, their principal.

Test over-dancing Shoes On!

Blue Ridge Elementary students and their families laced up their dancing shoes as a way to celebrate the end of Pennsylvania’s System of School Assessment (PSSA) testing.  Friday, April 19, the young and not so young gathered at the school for a “Family Dance Night.”  The evening capped off a week of intense test taking.

The event was filled with line dancing favorites from “The Chicken Dance” to “The Cupid Shuffle.”  Families rotated through various dance stations learning all kinds of moves including Zumba.  The evening provided a fun way to get a great workout.

The free program was made possible through the work of the Blue Ridge PTO, Blue Ridge Teachers and Staff and volunteers from the Blue Ridge National Honor Society.  For more information about the work of the Blue Ridge PTO, check us out on facebook.

PA One Book Author Visits Blue Ridge

On Wednesday April 10th, Blue Ridge Elementary had the pleasure of meeting Suzanne Bloom, talented author and illustrator.  Her beautiful picture book, The Bus for Us, is Pennsylvania's One Book, Every Young Child 2013 selection. Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child is a reading initiative that stresses the importance of reading early and often to our children as well as engaging them in conversation and activities around good literature. This is not the first time a book of Bloom’s was chosen as the PA One Book.  In 2007, A Splendid Friend, Indeed had been selected, and she was able to visit Blue Ridge at that time as well.
Mrs. Bloom visited our primary students in the morning and encouraged them to follow their dreams. Students were thrilled to hear Mrs. Bloom had a dream of becoming an author and artist at a young age, and they were able to discuss some of their own goals with her personally. Mrs. Bloom led a shared reading of A Bus for Us, and when students saw her beautiful illustrations, their eyes lit up with excitement. Thanks to Blue Ridge’s generous PTO, all Pre-K students received a copy of this year’s PA One Book, A Bus for Us. We would also like to thank the Commonwealth Library System of Pennsylvania for organizing this educational and beneficial author presentation.
