We Went On a Leaf Hunt!

Mrs. Rhone’s and Mrs. Skal’s Kindergarten classes went on two leaf hunts. One leaf hunt was completed as a homework assignment at the student’s house and a second leaf hunt took place in our school’s nature trail. The students listened to the story entitled, The Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. The students observed how the setting of this story changes as the Leaf Man travels to various places. After reading aloud this story, the students constructed their own leaf character. The students compared and contrasted the likenesses and differences in leaves that they found. In doing so, the students were asked to describe his/her leaf collection. Questions were posed such as: What color is it? What do the veins look like? Do there appear to be holes or pores on the surface? What shape is it? Are the edges of your leaves rough or smooth? After this discussion, the students sorted their leaves according to size: wide or narrow. The wide leaves were used to make the body and the narrow leaves were used to their leaf character’s hands and feet. Please see our pictures above!
On another day, the students went on a leaf hunt in our school’s nature trail. The students collected more leafs for an art activity based upon scientific and mathematical objectives. The purpose of this activity was to give our students the opportunity to observe natural patterns in leaves. In doing so, the students worked cooperatively in pairs of twos finger painting and stamping their leaves. These FUN Friday activities encompassed literacy, science, math and art academic standards. Please check out our creations above!
